ABOUT
The Hotel Phoenicia, the first luxury hotel in Malta is situated in 7.5 acres of mature gardens at the entrance to Valletta. The hotel commands glorious views over the surrounding areas and is within walking distance of the Island’s retail, commercial and financial centres and from the bustling restaurants and cafes in the city. The Phoenicia’s architectural beauty is classed as one of the sights of Malta along with such buildings rich in history as St. John’s Co-Cathedral, the Grand Masters Palace and those of the Auberges which still stand today. Its typical Maltese architecture is in striking contrast to the baroque and massive bastion walls that surround Valletta.
The Hotel Phoenicia was built in 1939 by Lord and Lady Strickland and designed by Architect A.M.B. Binnie. The aim of the project was to build Malta’s premier luxury hotel just outside Valletta’s Porta Reale. Since the Second World War broke out, the hotel was not officially opened but was taken over by the services and used by R.A.F personnel during their days off. The left wing of the hotel (by the Pegasus Brasserie) was hit by bombs and was re-built soon after the war. The hotel Phoenicia was officially opened in 1947 by Lady Margaret Strickland, His Grace Michael Gonzi, Archbishop of Malta, Lord Francis Campell, then Sir Francis, Governor of Malta, to provide a cosmopolitan clientele with a standard of comfort and service equalling that of the highest grade hotels in any European capital.
Information about this venue is available on the website of Hotel Phoenicia Malta – http://www.phoeniciamalta.com/
